SPL Audio’s De-Esser is an auto-dynamic processor that removes unwanted S-sounds by phase cancellation without losing the natural character.
The intensity of the reduction is set with the “S-Reduction” control. If the Auto-Threshold is activated for this purpose, the De-Esser adjusts the threshold automatically. This comes in handy when the speaking/vocal position to the microphone fluctuates. The intensity of the reduction always remains the same. With conventional de-essers using compressor technology, this would lead to unwanted effects in the subsequent processing.
Inputs and outputs (balanced):
- Maximum input and output level: 22dBu
- Input impedance: 22kΩ
- Output impedance: <600Ω
- Common mode rejection (1kHz): >80dB
- Frequency response (-3 dB): 20Hz – 50kHz
- THD & N (0dBu, 10Hz – 22kHz): 0.002%.
- Crosstalk (1kHz): -90dB
- Noise (A-weighted): -98dBu
- Dynamic range: 120dB

In addition, it is possible to switch between male and female. This allows the device to work at two different frequencies: If “Male” is selected, S sounds are lowered at approx. 6 kHz. If S sounds are higher, the “Female” setting is recommended. In this case, S-sounds are lowered with the center frequency at approx. 7 kHz.
The LED display shows how much the S sounds are reduced.
SPL has developed a circuit technique that combines efficient de-essing with maximum ease of use. The de-esser automatically narrows the bandwidth so that only the S-sounds are processed, but not the adjacent frequencies. This range is mixed with the original signal in a phase-inverted manner, which has the effect that S-sounds are cancelled out inconspicuously and without affecting the sound.
