If there is one preamp style that professional audio engineers would unanimously agree has defined the tone of pop/rock records for decades, it would definitely be the venerable 73 style of microphone preamps. 73-style preamps have been used massively in recording and live applications for many years, and are still considered the “Holy Grail” of preamp selection. The Warm Audio WA73-EQ is a single-channel 73-style preamp and equalizer that pays careful homage to British audio history.
When we at Warm Audio decided to release the WA73-EQ, it was imperative that it meet vintage expectations in both design and performance. The tone and sweet character conveyed by vintage 73-style mic preamps is so unique and familiar that we had only a pure desire to release sonically accurate reproductions. After years of development, intensive research and countless hours of testing, the WA73 was born!
The WA73-EQ shines equally on all types of microphones and audio sources including; vocals, acoustic/e-guitars, bass, drums, percussion, orchestras, keyboards and even as a sound shaping tool to play through partial or full mixes. With 80 dB of gain and a fully discrete balanced Carnhill Transformer signal path, there is hardly a recording, mixing or engineering task that the WA73 cannot handle.

Enthusiasts clearly get excited about the components used in classic ’73-style British preamps. The signal transformers are a frequent topic of conversation. Various versions of transformers have been used in vintage gear over the years, but the most sought-after were the earliest versions. These are considered the most desirable choice due to their fluid and forgiving nature. They saturate smoothly when driven, and have been known to make audio engineers smile when they hear how beautifully their mixes sound through them!
Warm Audio has worked closely with Carnhill Transformers of Cambridgeshire UK to develop faithful replicas of these coveted early transformers. At Warm Audio, we have yet to hear a modern 73-style preamp that sounds as sweet and musical as our WA73 with these beautiful custom Transformers.
