The UT Twin87 from United Studio Tech is an FET microphone with two different modes. With the two settings “Vintage” and “Modern”, the UT Twin87 combines two historical circuit variants of the prototype U87 in a single microphone and thus offers maximum sonic flexibility. The RF filter has also been designed to be switchable. A meticulously recreated K87 capsule, along with the best components and an oversized output transformer, capture a brilliant and warm sound.
United designed the UT Twin87 with the goal of providing the engineer and musician with a microphone that combines the best features of the originals. A popular modification to the original design was in the “true cardioid modification” performed by many sound engineers. This completely disabled polar pattern switching, resulting in a cardioid microphone with an extremely direct sound that helped pop vocals in particular gain superior punch. The UT Twin87 has this feature built right in from the factory, switching to a circuit equivalent to the True Cardioid Mod in its cardioid position. In contrast to the historical modifications, the omnidirectional and figure-of-eight polar patterns are fully preserved.

VINTAGE & MODERN IN ONE MIC
Depending on the year of manufacture, the circuits of the historical models of the UT Twin87 differ. The new model from United combines the two historical layouts and can be switched completely to taste. In Vintage Mode, the capsule is polarized directly by the 48-volt phantom power, just like the first originals. In Modern Mode, on the other hand, an FET boost circuit raises the bias voltage to 63 volts. Additionally, the two modes differ in their basic circuit design. The sonic difference is unmistakable: while the modern variant sounds more brilliant and assertive, the vintage mode enchants with the warm and flattering tone of historical recordings. Both sound variants were realized as discrete circuits in careful development work and offer the sound character of the originals in an impressive authenticity. A protection circuit adjusts the capsule voltage in a few seconds when switching modes, which decisively extends the life of the components used.
The gold-coated double-diaphragm capsule of the United UT Twin87 is an exact replica of the K87 model. The diaphragm is made of Japanese New Old Stock PET film, which meets or exceeds all specifications of the original. Unlike other foils, this material does not harden and thus guarantees consistent microphone sound over many decades – a characteristic for which the historic originals were already appreciated worldwide.
The output transformer of the United UT Twin87 is one of its sound-decisive components. The transformer, which was specially manufactured for the microphone, is four times larger than the transformers normally used in microphones of similar design, resulting in a significantly increased dynamic range and a powerful and detailed bass response. In this way, the UT Twin87 also helps a wide variety of sound sources to achieve the contoured sound image that has already made its role model a legend – from female solo vocals to powerful bass drums.
The switchable RF filter is further proof that United’s engineers left no detail, no matter how small, to chance when developing the UT Twin87. Later versions of the prototype had this high-frequency filter to allow interference-free use in broadcast stations. However, some users complained about a negative impact on the sound of the microphone. By using high quality components, we have managed to make the filter section of the UT Twin87 sound better than the original – yet a subtle difference in sound is audible. While there is a slight focus on highs when the filter is activated, the purist circuitry of earlier versions offers a more upward, natural-sounding frequency spectrum. The UT Twin87 is shipped from the factory with the filter disabled, but it can be switched on at any time via internal DIP switches. This also means: For the first time it is possible to realize the sound of an early original with filter circuit or that of a later model without RF unit.
