- Small diaphragm tube microphones
- Cardioid, omnidirectional, hypercardioid
- TK60, TK61, TK62 Capsule
- Particularly suitable for acoustic and classical recordings
The ELA M 260 small diaphragm microphone is probably one of the best tube microphones for acoustic and classical recordings.
It offers a rich sound with excellent detail and clarity.
The Telefunken ELA M 260 may not be a historically accurate reproduction of the original like the Diamond series microphones, but it is built with the same attention to detail and quality you would expect from a Telefunken microphone. The ELA M 260 tri-mono set is supplied with 3 microphones and five capsules.
Scope of delivery: 3x ELA M 260 microphone with TK60, TK61, TK62 capsule and a set of diffuse field spheres, M 960 three-channel power supply unit, 3x M 860 double-shielded TX-7 tube microphone cable with angled XLR socket, 3x M 761 elastic shock mount and hard case with zipper.

- Intrinsic noise (amplifier): 11 dBA

Small diaphragm Tube microphone
The microphone has a powerful sound with excellent detail and clarity.
It captures sources with a natural presence, making it a fantastic tool for recording acoustic instruments of all kinds.
Violin, cello, double bass, drum overheads, percussion, woodwinds, saxophones, strings and especially acoustic guitars all come into their own with the ELA M 260.
Despite its size, it also performs well in vocal applications.
Its unique sound character is very well suited to a wide range of applications, both traditional and non-traditional.
The ELA M 260 system features a new circuit design based on a New Old Stock (NOS) EF732 / 5840W vacuum tube and a custom-built output transformer wound in the USA to exacting specifications.
The combination of these features results in a unique small diaphragm microphone that retains the qualities of the old microphones on which it is based.
Engineers recording classical music for Decca Records pioneered the Decca Tree miking technique in the early 1950s when they wanted a powerful stereo image and balanced coverage of an orchestra as heard by the conductor.
With this technique, three omnidirectional microphones are set up in an inverted “T” configuration roughly above the conductor’s head.
The “left” and “right” microphones are positioned behind the conductor, while the “middle” microphone is suspended in front of the conductor.
In addition to orchestral recordings, the Decca Tree configuration can also be invaluable in more modern recording for percussion applications, adding a kind of “band in a room” atmosphere to the recording process.
The most common Decca Tree configuration consists of three 1-meter poles from which the microphones are suspended in a triangular configuration; however, larger and smaller pole sets can also be used.
One of the problems often associated with Decca Tree technology is the loss of high frequencies due to the physical conditions of sound propagation.
To counteract this, Telefunken has developed diffuse field spheres as accessories for the ELA M 260 Tri-Mono Recording Set.
Capsules for ELA M 260
TK60 (kidney)

The Telefunken TK60 is a small diaphragm capsule with cardioid characteristic that can be used on the ELA M 260 tube microphone and the M60 FET microphone.
Equipped with a gold-sputtered 6-micron diaphragm and a diameter of 15 mm, the TK60 has a surprisingly full bass range for a small diaphragm capsule and offers fast and precise transient response.
These small diaphragm capsules are tested with a strict sensitivity tolerance of ±1 dB.
The frequency response is very linear from 150 Hz to 7 kHz, with a smooth, airy presence peak at 8 kHz, making them ideal for drum overheads, acoustic guitar and other acoustic instruments.
TK61 (ball)

The Telefunken TK61 is an omnidirectional small diaphragm capsule that can be used on the ELA M 260 tube microphone and the M60 FET microphone.
Equipped with a gold sputtered 6-micron diaphragm and a diameter of 15 mm, the TK61 has a large, open sound that is perfect for capturing the subtle nuances and space of the recording environment.
The frequency response is very linear from 20 Hz to 5 kHz, with a soft, airy presence peak at 8 kHz.
These small diaphragm capsules are tested with a strict sensitivity tolerance of ±1 dB.
In combination with the diffuse field spheres of the ELA M 260 tri-mono system, the TK61 spherical capsule captures the atmosphere and mood of the room and breathes life into every recording.
TK62 (hypercardioid)

The Telefunken TK62 is a small diaphragm capsule with hypercardioid characteristic that can be used on the ELA M 260 tube microphone and the M60 FET microphone.
Equipped with a gold-sputtered 6-micron diaphragm and a diameter of 15 mm, the TK62 offers a very linear frequency response from 150 Hz to 3 kHz, with a dip at 6 kHz and a soft, airy presence peak at 8 kHz.
These small diaphragm capsules are tested with a strict sensitivity tolerance of ±1 dB.
This tight polar pattern is ideal for cymbals, percussion and as a stereo pair for live recordings.
