The SPL Phonitor 3 is a high-quality headphone amplifier and monitor controller equipped with advanced 120V technology to deliver exceptional sound quality. Developed by SPL, it offers the same monitoring quality via speakers and headphones as the coveted SPL 120 Volt mastering consoles.
With three analog XLR stereo inputs, the Phonitor 3 enables flexible connection to various audio devices such as high-quality DA converters or audio interfaces. It has a variety of monitoring functions, including source selection, mono/stereo switching and phase inversion.
The unique phonitor matrix enables precise reproduction of the stereo image via headphones, which facilitates mixing and mastering and creates a natural spatial perception. The Phonitor 3 is optionally available with an expansion rack, which offers additional connection options for active speakers or power amplifiers.
Designed to be robust and user-friendly, the Phonitor 3 is equipped with a solid aluminum rotary knob and mechanical VU meters for precise level monitoring. It is ideal for demanding producers, mixing and mastering engineers and hi-fi enthusiasts looking for the highest sound quality and flexibility.

120 Volt Technology
The 120V technology works with +/-60 V. In order to be able to process such a high voltage, we have developed special proprietary operational amplifiers that can work with a DC voltage of +/-60 V – the SPL 120V SUPRA operational amplifiers. This high voltage would destroy conventional components and operational amplifiers.
The 120V technology achieves exceptional technical specifications and sonic advantages. Technically speaking, in terms of dynamic range, signal-to-noise ratio and clipping resistance. In terms of sound, richness of detail and an absolutely relaxed listening experience.
Incidentally, the “120V” in the name of the technology has nothing to do with the local mains voltage from the socket. This refers to the operating voltage in the device with which the audio signals are processed.
The mains voltage from the socket is transformed to the required secondary voltage in the device’s internal linear power supply unit with toroidal transformer. Rectifiers convert this AC voltage into the DC voltages required in the audio device.
The idea for the SPL 120V technology and the SUPRA operational amplifier based on it was developed in the 1990s by SPL founder and chief developer Wolfgang Neumann. With the aim of building the best mastering console of all time, this basic technological philosophy then took shape for the first time. In 2000, the SPL MMC 1 mastering console was developed for Galaxy Studios and set new standards.
The outstanding sound and technical characteristics of SPL products with 120V technology quickly spread throughout the scene, leading to further orders. In addition to the MMC 1, the PQ, known as the “King of Parametric Equalizers”, was also developed with 120V technology.
Since then, 120V technology has formed the basis for all SPL premium products, not only for mastering applications, but also for studio and hi-fi use.
Most audio devices work with an internal operating voltage of +/-15 volts and can process a maximum input level of +21.5 dBu. Thanks to the higher internal operating voltage of +/- 60 volts, SPL devices with 120V technology can process input levels of +32.5 dBu, providing 12 dB more headroom and a more relaxed, natural sound without unpleasant coloration.
The following diagrams illustrate the superiority of 120V technology over circuits with lower operating voltages.

Expansion Rack
The Phonitor 3 can be expanded into a full-featured monitor controller by adding an Expansion Rack.
In the expansion rack, the phonitor is installed in a 19″ housing. This allows the headphone amplifier to be installed in a studio desk or rack.
There is a module that is connected to the main out of the Phonitor 3. The add-on module provides four outputs for speaker pairs and a controller knob to select the desired speaker. This turns the Phonitor 3 into a full-featured monitor controller.

Great sound – for headphones
The Phonitor 3 has a connection for standard headphones with a jack plug on the front. Thanks to the high output power, it drives all headphones effortlessly and effortlessly. In this way, it exploits the advantages of SPL 120V technology and rewards the listener with an honest, detailed and at the same time lively sound experience.
Great sound – even for speakers
On the rear, the Phonitor 3 has a stereo output pair consisting of two XLR line outputs, making it a high-quality monitoring controller for any monitoring situation.
Active speakers with an integrated power amplifier or passive speakers in combination with a power amplifier can be connected to these.

Analog inputs
On the analog side, two analog stereo input pairs are available, each with two XLR line inputs. Professional analog players with balanced outputs and line level can be connected there.
Eavesdropping without compromise
The Phonitor 3 is a fully-fledged
monitor controller:
- Source selection
- Phonitor matrix with crossfeed, speaker angle and center level (the latter can be switched off)
- Mono/Stereo
- Laterality control
- Solo L/R
- Phase inversion for L and R
- L/R Swap
- Output switchable for headphones or loudspeakers
- Mute

Sounds good
With all SPL devices, we develop not only according to plan, but also by ear. Many of the basic components are installed in through-hole mounting (THT) on the circuit boards. This allows SPL to ensure that they can install the components that sound best.
