The Phonitor 2 from SPL is a high-end headphone amplifier that can also be used as a monitor controller. It has one unbalanced RCA and two balanced XLR inputs. A balanced XLR output allows direct connection of studio monitors to this headphone amplifier. It is equipped with 120V technology and thus meets the highest quality demands in mastering.
The special feature of the Phonitor 2 is that the innovative Phonitor Matrix is built in. Here, with the help of a crossfeed, a sound image can be created that is very close to that of speakers. In this version of the Phonitor, the parameters Crossfeed, Speaker Angle and Center Level are available. Crossfeed allows you to adjust the crosstalk of the two channels in six intensity levels. Angle determines the angle of the speakers. The values 15°, 22°, 30°, 40°, 55° and 75° are available here. The greater the intensity of the crossfeed, the louder the center. Therefore, the center level can be reduced via Center Level in order to achieve a balanced sound image.
Some functions can be adjusted via toggle switches. This includes the source and output selection. Via a third switch, the channels L + R can be listened to individually. By means of the fourth toggle switch, one of the two channels can be rotated in phase.
The input level can be read via the mechanical VU meter and adjusted in sensitivity via the toggle switch below it. The choices are 0, -6 and -12 dB.
By nature, hearing is more pronounced on one side. This is especially noticeable over headphones. To counteract this, the Phonitor 2 has the finely resolved Laterality control. With this, a signal can be shifted to the right or left side. Via the toggle switch positioned next to it, the incoming signal can be monitored in mono, stereo or optinal the signal stretched via the laterality pot.
On the bottom side of the device there is a dip switch. Here, the consumer level can be raised from -10 dBV to 0 dBu for CD players and other hi-fi equipment.
In addition, the volume control can be remotely controlled via an infrared control. This is done by pressing the Learn button on the back of the headphone amplifier and teaching the corresponding louder and quieter buttons.

Expansion Rack
In this version, the phonitor is installed in a 19″ housing. This allows the headphone amplifier to be installed in a studio desk or rack.
The enclosure comes with a module that connects to the main out of the Phonitor 2. The additional module offers four outputs for speaker pairs and a controller knob that can be used to select the desired speaker. This turns the Phonitor 2 into a fully featured monitor controller.
Headphone amp & Preamplifier
Designed specifically for audiophile circuits, the Burr-Brown OPA 2134 SoundPlus™ op-amps provide preamplification with extremely low noise and distortion of only 0.00008%. Using an FET stage, the op-amp achieves a slew rate of 20V/µs for liveliness and playing pleasure.
Low capacitance film capacitors are used as bypass capacitors to ensure precise transmission of the high frequency signal components.
The bipolar transistors, which are built into the output stage of the headphone amplifier, divide positive and negative half-waves during amplification. This allows a larger output voltage than with a transistor that amplifies both half-waves. Thermal coupling of the power amplifier transistors ensures a consistent sound image.
