The MTC Mk2 from SPL Audio is a monitor and talkback controller that redefines the studio standard. In terms of signal quality and function, the classic monitor controller has been brought up to date and adapted to the needs of modern music production workstations. Extensive source and speaker selection, multiple monitoring modes, an integrated premium talkback system, 2 headphone amplifiers with phonitor matrix, an additional feed path for an individual artist mix as well as an internal audio operating voltage of +/-18 volts make the MTC Mk2 once again the professional studio standard among monitor controllers.
Analog inputs and outputs (XLR & TRS jack balanced, RCA):
  • Maximum input level (XLR, TRS jack): 22.5dBu
  • Maximum input level (RCA): 22.5dBu
  • Input impedance (jack): 20kΩ
  • Input impedance (RCA): 20kΩ
  • Output impedance (XLR): 75Ω
  • Common mode rejection (1 kHz): 80dBu
  • Frequency response (-3dB): 10Hz – 150kHz
  • THD +N (10Hz – 22kHz, 0dBu): 0.0027%.
  • Noise (A-weighted): -94.3dBu
  • Dynamic range (XLR, jack): 116.3dB
  • Dynamic range (RCA): 116.3dB

Monitor & Talkback Controller

The MTC Mk2 provides three output pairs for stereo speakers and a mono output for a subwoofer. The respective stereo pairs are selected via high-quality analog switches. Thanks to the individual switches, multiple selection is also possible. Additionally, a subwoofer can be switched on and off via the SUB switch. This can be combined with any speaker selection. The subwoofer output sends a mono summed signal with full frequency range. Therefore, a mono monitoring speaker can alternatively be connected to this output. On the input side, four analog stereo inputs are available. Via the switches IN A to IN D corresponding inputs can be switched on or off. A multiple selection is possible. All inputs are additive. A mono signal should always be fed into the left channel in order to hear it in the phantom center. The TRS jack inputs A, B and C are optimal for connecting balanced sources, such as a high-quality DA-converter or audio interface. RCA input D is perfect for connecting, for example, a CD player or other comparative sources with RCA outputs.
Input C can also be used as a cue mix input. Ideally, the signal that is fed to a musician/performer as a monitor mix during the recording session is fed in here. The signal present at input C, as soon as the CUE MIX switch in the headphone section is activated, is sent to the ARTIST headphone output 2 as well as to the rear output CUE OUT. The talkback signal is also routed to the CUE OUT output. Thus, nothing stands in the way of flawless communication with the Artist. The talkback system of the MTC Mk2 now features a high-quality condenser microphone capsule, which is also used in measurement microphones. The talkback system is activated by the TALK button. This lights up when pressed. The LEVEL control adjusts the volume of the talkback signal. The FOOTSWITCH input allows the connection of a foot switch or pushbutton with TS or TRS jack. This way, the talkback system can also be operated hands-free. The talkback signal is also output at the TALK OUT output on the rear panel. This signal can be sent to a speaker in the recording room or back to the DAW, for example. When the TALK button is pressed, the output level of the CUE OUT and the ARTIST headphone amplifier HP2 is lowered by 3 dB by default. Using the DIP switch DIP 1, a further 10 dB reduction can be added. This increases the intelligibility of the speaker in the artist monitoring signal during playback. In addition to the DIM switch function for quickly reducing the monitoring volume by 10 dB, the MTC Mk2 also offers the option of completely switching off all speaker outputs with the SP MUTE switch. This is practical, for example, when monitoring via a pair of speakers with subwoofer. Only one switch has to be pressed to switch off this combination. The controller allows three different monitoring modes: The mix can be monitored in regular stereo or checked for mono compatibility in mono. Phase inversion can be used to invert the phase of the signal. LR SWAP reverses the stereo image. Left thus becomes right and vice versa. This saves time, for example, when samples are heard in the video dubbing that must match a scene with direction of motion.
An external metering system such as a stereo VU meter can be connected to the METER OUT output. The output signal at METER OUT corresponds to the output signal at the SPEAKER OUT outputs. However, the level of the METER OUT is not affected by the large volume control. The 45mm large, massive, milled aluminum knob for the analog volume control offers the perfect control path to set the monitoring volume intuitively and unerringly. and unerringly. To be able to adjust the monitoring volume perfectly to the system, DIP switches are available on the bottom of the device: At normal monitoring volume (e.g. 83 dB SPL at the monitoring position), the volume control should be in the one o’clock position range. This gives you an ideal control path for listening quieter and louder. If active loudspeakers or power amplifiers are very sensitive, the playback can already be quite loud in the first third of the control range. By activating the -6 dB and/or the -10 dB DIP switch (DIP 2 & DIP 3), the level is reduced accordingly to use the ideal range of the volume control. If DIP 2 and DIP 3 are on, the result is a level reduction of approximately 13 dB. The MTC Mk2 delivers rich headphone sound – twice! The output stage of the headphone amplifier is designed as a push-pull amplifier in Class AB operation. In this mode, the bipolar transistors share the amplification of the positive and negative half-waves, which produces a higher gain and a larger output voltage than in Class A operation, where only one transistor amplifies both half-waves. The output stage transistors are thermally coupled and thus run particularly coherently, which contributes to a consistent and stable sound image. The power supply features a buffer circuit with low source resistance, ensuring generous current reserves even when operating low-impedance headphones. Both headphone outputs are equipped with the Phonitor Matrix, which provides a listening experience similar to loudspeakers. The parameter “Crossfeed” is available here, which is continuously adjustable. The “Angle” parameter is fixed to the studio standard of 30°.
