The DeS from SPL Audio is a dual-band de-esser in 500 format.

The module has two bands that are used for de-essing S sounds. The Hi band has a center frequency at 11.2kHz and operates with a bandwidth of 3kHz. The Lo band can be switched between Male and Female and works accordingly at two different frequencies: If “Male” is selected, S sounds are lowered at 6.4kHz. If S sounds are higher, the “Female” setting is recommended. In this case, S-sounds are lowered at the center frequency 7.6kHz. Both settings refer to a bandwidth of 1.44kHz.

Both the whole module and the two bands individually can be set to bypass mode via a switch.

In addition, the de-esser has a signal LED installed, which indicates whether a signal is present, which exceeds -20dB. This allows you to quickly see if a signal is arriving at the de-esser.

Dual-Band De-Esser

SPL has developed a circuit technique that combines efficient de-essing with maximum ease of use. The DeS automatically narrows the bandwidth so that only the S sounds are processed, but not the adjacent frequencies. This range is mixed with the original signal in a phase-inverted manner, with the result that S-sounds are cancelled out inconspicuously and without affecting the sound. Thanks to the auto-threshold, S-sounds are processed based on the incoming signal. As a result, the module works optimally even if the speaking position to the microphone changes and fluctuates. With conventional de-essers using compressor technology, this would lead to unwanted effects in the subsequent processing.
