- Rupert Neve custom transformers and operational amplifiers
- max. SPL 151dB
After more than ten years of joint development work, the cooperation between sE Electronics and Rupert Neve Designs is once again bearing great fruit: with the RNT, the two development teams present a tube microphone that is second to none.
With its exceptional technical specifications and incredible sound, the RNT marks a new milestone in the history of microphone technology.
It combines a high-voltage tube circuit in the microphone with two custom transformers from Rupert Neve’s pen, a discrete Class A amplifier, in which the same custom operational amplifiers are installed as in Rupert Neve’s flagship 5088 console, and a specially tuned, hand-made microphone capsule from sE.
The interaction of these components ensures, among other things, an extremely high headroom of 151dB and a very wide frequency response of up to 100kHz.
Due to this enormous headroom, the microphone does not require a pad.
Nevertheless, the amplifier module is equipped with three gain settings (-12dB, 0dB flat and +12dB).
The frequency response of the amplifier ranges +/-2dB from <1Hz to 100kHz and is completely flat from 1Hz to 30kHz.
Thanks to the +/-36VDC technology, the circuit does not produce any clipping even when the capsule is supplied with maximum voltage.
In addition, the amplifier unit has a LoCut filter that can be activated at 40Hz or 80Hz, as well as a nine-position switch that can switch the 9 directional characteristics from omnidirectional to cardioid to figure-eight, each with a few intermediate steps.
In addition to the microphone itself, the scope of delivery includes a custom spider, an RNT floor box (power supply unit), an 8-pin cable (to connect the microphone to the power supply unit), an sE logo sticker, an IEC power cable, a wooden microphone box, an aluminum flight case and a multilingual manual.

FLAGSHIP TUBE MICROPHONE
“I was impressed not only by the clarity and detail, but also by how easy it was to quickly insert the voice into the track.
I was saying to someone the other day that you don’t have to have a lot of high-end equipment to make a great sounding recording, but it does make the job a bit easier – and the RNT just helped me get great results quickly during its time in my studio. I don’t like to use the term “musical” in the context of audio equipment, but with all the vocalists I recorded with this mic, it framed the voice in a way that just worked in the song. Isolated, it may sound a little bright and even lean compared to other large diaphragm tube mics, but its forward-facing top end combined with a focused bottom end is a combination that works well on many tracks. When you see the name Rupert Neve and expect it to be a characterful and colorful sounding mic, that’s not really the case. It’s certainly not sterile – especially with loud sources – but the RNT is more about clarity and detail, with a touch of tube and transformer quality to round things off a bit.” – Neil Rogers by half-ton Studios
