This kidney capsule is designed for speaking from a close distance, i.e. directly in front of the speaker’s mouth.
Its bass roll-off is compensated for by the proximity effect (proximity effect). It therefore has a constant frequency response for the speaker – with the exception of the treble boost – while it has a frequency response with a drop in bass for background noise coming from a greater distance. As a result, background noise is attenuated compared to the speaker.

The P series
Schoeps offers special directional capsules for close miking. They have a pronounced, fixed bass roll-off. This compensates for the proximity effect and suppresses pops and ambient noise. As a result, P-series microphones offer broadcast quality even when used in noisy football stadiums.
The P series microphones have a P in the product name. P stands for Proximity, where “XP” means a particularly strong compensation of the proximity. They are used for speech from a short distance. Therefore, P types should not be used at a distance of more than 20 cm and XP types should not be used further than 10 cm away.
Speech intelligibility is significantly improved by compensating for the proximity effect of the P series. They are often used in fixed installations, but also in the Schoeps headset HSC 4VP/4VXP.
