The Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5017 consists of a robust, portable cabinet with first-class preamp, compressor and DI circuits as well as two-channel operation, Vari-Phase, Silk and DI/Mic-Blending functions and is an innovative and powerful tool for recording or live performances.

  • Microphone preamplifier and DI box with opto compressor
  • Silk circuit
  • Microphone amplification up to 66 dB
  • DI amplification up to 30 dB
  • High-pass filter
  • balanced / unbalanced Hi-Z input
  • 48V phantom power
  • Phase inversion
  • Threshold control for compressor
  • Flexible setting via internal jumpers
  • Signal-to-noise ratio: -100 dBu (unity gain)
  • Output: +23 dBu

TWO CHANNEL OPERATION
With two transformer-coupled outputs, the 5017 has separate line outputs for the DI/blend and microphone signals when the blend control is set to fully DI.
The microphone output is always independent.

SILK
Pressing the Silk button activates the Silk circuit, which amplifies the harmonic content of the source in a way that is very reminiscent of many of Rupert’s vintage Class A designs.

MIC GAIN
A 12-position precision rotary switch that covers Line (0) and Mic from 0 to 66 dB in 6 dB steps.

INST GAIN
Continuous gain control from 0 dB to 30 dB.

THRU & INST 1/4″ CLUTCHES
Balanced or unbalanced Hi-Z input for instruments, with a THRU output to send the signal to an amplifier.

+48V PHANTOM POWER
Supplies 48 V phantom power for microphones.
Controlled via a switch on the back of the device.

HIGH-PASS FILTER
The high-pass filter is a valuable tool in any signal chain, but especially in a microphone preamplifier.
Signals below 80 Hz can be attenuated at a rate of 12 dB/octave to eliminate building noise, motor hum, etc.

POLARITY
The pushbutton reverses the polarity of the microphone input signal path.
The “Ø” symbol is often used to indicate the opposite polarity.

VARI-PHASE
When the VARI-PHASE control is activated, the phase is rotated in steps so that two signals with the same source can be phase-matched.
This control is most noticeable when the signals to be combined have approximately equal levels and is generally used when mixing the direct signal of an instrument with the amplified signal recorded by a microphone.

THE COMPRESSOR
The 5017’s opto-coupler compressor is based on a new LDR (light-dependent resistor) design and has been simplified to a single threshold control with automatic gain.
By default, the compressor is set to a fixed 2:1 ratio with fixed attack and release.
To adjust the compressor, simply turn down the threshold control until the desired compression level is reached.
An LED light indicates when the compressor is active.

Meter
displays on the 5017 indicate the presence of signals and clipping for both DI and microphone signals as well as the activation of the compressor.

INTERNAL JUMPER
Two internal jumpers in the 5017 can be set to switch the compressor from the microphone channel to the DI/mix channel and to change the compressor time constant from standard to fast.
