NEWTON CHANNEL

The name comes from Rupert’s birthplace – Newton Abbot, England – and reflects the sonic journeys of his life: from Newton Abbot to Wimberley, vintage to modern and everything in between.
This is a truly versatile, world-class channel strip that can bring any source to life with the classic sound of Rupert Neve designs.

MIC GAIN
Rotary switch with 12 positions, which regulates the gain of the microphone preamplifier in 6 dB steps.
For input signals with line level, set the Mic Gain to the “0dB” position.

48V
Push-button switch that lights up RED when the +48V phantom power is switched on.

Ø (Polarity)
Push-button switch that lights up yellow when activated and reverses the phase of the preamplifier signal.

TRIM
Potentiometer with 31 digits, with which the user can adjust the gain of the preamplifier in a range of +/- 6 dB.

HPF
Push-button switch that lights up GREEN when the high-pass filter is activated.

FREQ
31 potentiometer, with which the user can set the cut-off frequency of the Sallen-Key high-pass filter in a range from 20 Hz to 250 Hz.

EQ IN
Push-button switch that lights up GREEN when the EQ section is activated.

LF
31-step potentiometer with which the boost or cut of the low frequencies can be adjusted in a range of +/- 12 dB.

60/150
Push-button switch to select between the two available low bass base frequencies: 60Hz (OUT) and 150Hz (IN).

MID FREQ
31-step potentiometer with which the frequency of the mid-frequency peak EQ can be set in a range from 220 Hz to 7 kHz.

MID
31-degree potentiometer that controls the amount of boost or cut of the MID FREQ peaking EQ in a range of +/- 12 dB.

——–

POWER
IEC mains connection with integrated mains switch.
100-240VAC at 50/60Hz.
Maximum AC power consumption 35 watts.

EARTHING UP
Slide switch that disconnects XLR pin 1 from the chassis ground of the MAIN OUT and the -6dB OUT to help isolate ground noise.

-6dB OUTPUT
Balanced XLR output utilizing a lower level secondary output on the custom Rupert Neve Designs transformer.

MAIN OUT
Balanced XLR output that uses a custom Rupert Neve Designs transformer.

LINK
1/4-inch TRS socket that can be used to connect two Newton Channel compressors together for stereo compressor operation.
*Intended for use with other Newton Channel LINK jacks only.

INPUT
Balanced XLR-1/4″ TRS combo jack input that can be used for MIC or LINE level signals.

8K/16K
Push-button switch to select between the two available high-frequency shelf frequencies: 8kHz (OUT) and 16kHz (IN).

HF
31-step potentiometer that controls the boost or cut of the high frequency range in a range of +/- 12 dB.

COMP IN
Push-button switch that lights up GREEN when the compressor is switched on.

THRESHOLD
31-degree potentiometer that controls the threshold range of the compressor from +20 dBu to -30 dBu.
If the input signal rises above the set threshold, compression begins with a soft knee at a ratio of 2:1.

RELEASE
31-step potentiometer for controlling the release time of the compressor.
The total available time range is 50mS (FAST) to 500mS (SLOW).
Note: The attack time is set to 20mS.

GAIN
31 potentiometer for controlling the compressor gain in a range from -6 dB to +20 dB.

PRE-EQ
Push-button switch that switches the compressor before the EQ when it is activated.

SILK
Illuminated push-button switch that can be used to switch between the three available SILK modes: OFF, RED and BLUE.

TEXTURE
31-step potentiometer that controls the amount of SILK harmonics added to the transformer output stage when SILK is activated.

GR and OUT display
8-segment LED displays that show the gain reduction of the compressor (dB) and the output level (dBu).

POWER
LED, which lights up GREEN when the Newton channel is switched on.

The EQ

The Newton’s EQ section is optimized for speed and flexibility with a simplified set of controls.
The low and high frequency bands are controllable with precise 31-dent potentiometers that provide up to 12 dB of gain boost/cut, allowing you to choose either subtle or extreme settings.

The parametric mid band of the Newton EQ section has a further 31-degree potentiometer and a wide range of mid frequencies that can be boosted or cut from 220 Hz to 7 kHz.
This makes the MF band particularly flexible and allows you to tame the unrest in the lower mids, boost the presence of the mid frequencies or remove any harshness in the upper midrange.
The carefully chosen fixed Q setting maintains a healthy balance between musicality and precision – just wide enough for far-reaching equalization without affecting adjacent frequencies.

Like every section of the Newton Channel, the EQ also has an independent bypass button that allows you to check the settings at every step.

The compressor

The Newton channel also includes the latest version of Rupert Neve Designs’ ultra-smooth VCA compressor with +20 dB make-up gain and plenty of control for any level of compression required without compromising the sound.

There is also a helpful pre-EQ/post-EQ button to place the compressor either before or after the EQ section, as well as an independent bypass button.

Silk

At the end of the Newton signal path is the unique and highly desirable variable Silk circuit, which provides the power and control to amplify harmonics
2. and
3. from a subtle transformer tonality without Silk to significantly more color than vintage modules with the Silk/Texture circuit fully turned up, the Newton’s output stage can fill out tracks with more power and sparkle.

Custom Transformer Outputs

The Newton channel features a custom transformer output stage with a balanced MAIN standard line level output.
In addition, a separate -6dBu XLR output can compensate for high input levels and harmonic saturation from Silk, allowing the Newton to be fully driven to achieve more transformer harmonics without overdriving the next device in the chain.
Both outputs are active and can be used simultaneously.
