For more than six decades, audio transformers have been the foundation of Rupert Neve’s design philosophy for audio circuitry – and Rupert Neve Designs’ custom transformers are an integral part of virtually every RND product.
Equipped with these transformers, the MBT offers an incredible range of flavorful options that can sweeten, enhance, drive, broaden and completely transform the source material, making it the ultimate tool for musical coloration.
With 3 octave ranges, smooth slopes and minimal phase shifts, the all-new 2-band shelf EQ section has been designed with simplicity and elegance in mind. This smooth and musical EQ provides just the right amount of sound enhancement – especially when used in conjunction with the other sections of the Rupert Neve Design Master Bus Transformer.
With an all-new optical compressor design, the Color Comp brings out the non-linear distortion and “colorful” characteristics of the Opto-Cell, adding a new sense of life and depth to the source material.
The Color Comp features two selectable ratios, a tunable high-pass side-chain filter, variable threshold and release, 20dB Class-A makeup gain and a blend control for parallel processing.
The Width section was developed to increase the perceived stereo width without losing the focus on the low frequencies.
The Width section of the MBT is inspired by the Stereo Field Editor (SFE) “WIDTH” controls found in our award-winning Master Buss Processor, but has a few key differences:
The width control of the MBT is additive only, with a wider range for more extreme operation.
There is a variable high-pass filter (50 Hz to 800 Hz) that can be used to adjust the width component so that the low frequencies remain more centered in the mix, while the mids and highs are spread out to create more space.
In addition, there is a subtle tapering of the width component in the high frequency range to avoid overemphasizing the harder HF tones.
The Silk circuit was introduced nearly twenty years ago and has long been a favorite for Rupert Neve Designs users. Initially available as a simple on/off switch, then with selectable Red and Blue modes and the variable Texture control, Silk serves to enhance and control the even and odd harmonics in any source material.
Super Silk is the latest evolution of this popular technology: with independent controls for Red, Blue, Harmonics and Zener Drive and the ability to adjust gain into (and out of) the circuit, the Master Bus Transformer takes harmonic manipulation to a whole new level.
- HPF stepless 15 Hz to 100 Hz
- 2-band shelf EQ section with 3 octave ranges
- Color Compressor
- Stereo-Width Processor with HPF
- Super Silk with Zener Drive
- Frequency response: <5 Hz – 180 kHz: -3 dB (<5 Hz – 30 kHz: +/- 0.1 dB)
- Signal-to-noise ratio: -88dBu to better than -95dBu
- Input: +25.5 dBu
All measurements were taken with 25ft. Van Damme XLR output cable (Balanced ZSOURCE = 40 ohm)

SUPER SILK
RED accentuates the overtones in the upper mids and highs and gives them shine and shimmer.
BLUE accentuates the overtones in the low and mid frequencies and gives them more depth and weight.
HARMONICS increases the overall musical overtone content and interacts with both Silk BLUE and RED.
ZENER DRIVE introduces a diode-based soft-clip circuit for a more aggressive tonality as the MBT approaches clipping.
SILK IN activates or bypasses the entire SUPER SILK section – and is now finally “Silk Purple”, one of our most requested functions.

Color Comp
The compressor ratio can be set to 2:1 (LO) for subtle and gentle compression or 5:1 (HI) for a much more dramatic response.
The variable high-pass side-chain filter removes the low frequencies from the compressor’s side-chain circuit, allowing the low frequencies to pass through the compressor untouched while the compressor focuses on the rest of the signal. With a tunable range of 20 Hz to 350 Hz, this is an extremely flexible control for sound shaping, offering the ability to leave the low end intact and tame or attenuate the rest of the source material as required.
The Color Comp also has a blend control that allows you to use the compression circuit in parallel with the uncompressed source material. This can be particularly useful if you want to remove harmonic content, dynamic range reduction and transient suppression from more extreme compressor settings.
The threshold value is variable from 0 dBu to +24 dBu, with a gain reduction LED lighting up if the signal exceeds the threshold value. However, the Color Comp also produces audible non-linear harmonics, even if the gain reduction is only slight. We therefore recommend listening to the Color Comp even when no gain reduction is visible to appreciate the degree of tonality it produces. The pleasing nature of this harmonic content becomes even more apparent as the compressor settings become more extreme.
The release is variable from 100mS to 1.5S. By setting higher ratios and faster release times, it is possible to get the Color Comp to actively “pump” with the attacks, while at slower release times it works in a much smoother way.
And finally, the Color Comp has 20 dB Class A amplification. This is not only useful for adjusting the level of the signals before and after compression, but also for controlling the intermediate transformers in the Super Silk section to achieve even greater harmonic improvements.
Tonal Magic with the Shelf EQ
Each band has a gain control of +/- 9 dB, whereby the cut-off frequency of the LF EQ is variable from 30 Hz to 240 Hz and the cut-off frequency of the HF EQ is variable from 3 kHz to 24 kHz.
The LF band is ideal for taming or accentuating the low frequencies and adding a certain amount of weight and power to the source material.
The HF band offers a wide range of corner frequencies to choose from, allowing adjustments from the upper midrange to the peaks, adding extra sparkle and clarity to tracks.
An exciting aspect of using the MBT is discovering how the different sections can interact with each other. Sometimes the EQ can be adjusted first, sometimes it can be left alone until the other sections are adjusted. One thing is certain: the MBT encourages experimentation at all times.
