SILK TEXTURE
One of the most important features of the 511 is the Silk/Texture control. Originally developed for the original Portico series microphone preamps, the Silk circuit was just a single switch – on or off – that adds a certain amount of musical, pleasing harmonic saturation to the unit’s output stage.
The Texture control goes one step further and regulates the actual amount of overtones in the source material.
By reducing negative feedback through the output transformer and adjusting the frequency response of that feedback, the Silk/Texture circuit provides the “sweet”, musical saturation found in Rupert’s legendary vintage designs – but with complete and precise control over the amount of classic tone you desire.
GAIN
A 12-way precision rotary switch controls the gain from 0 to 66 dB in 6 dB steps.
When the gain switch is set to unity (0 dB), the 511 can handle a balanced input signal of more than +20 dBu without input attenuation – a unique feature that allows the Silk circuit and other features of the 511 to be applied to line-level sources.
TRIM
Infinitely adjustable +/-6 dB control for fine-tuning the level.
+48V
Switches on the phantom power for the microphone input as supplied by the 500 rack.
LEVEL METER
An LED bar display with eight segments shows the output level (before Silk).
The color range extends from green for signals with a low level to yellow for signals with a medium level and red for high levels.
If the 511 is overdriven, the highest red LED lights up longer, depending on how far above the overdrive threshold the signal was.
POLARITY
The pushbutton reverses the polarity of the signal path and lights up when activated.
The “Ø” symbol is often used to indicate the opposite polarity.
HIGH-PASS FILTER
The high-pass filter is continuously adjustable from 20-250 Hz and is activated with the HPF switch, which lights up when activated.
It is a valuable tool in any signal chain, but especially in a microphone preamplifier.
Signals below the selected frequency are attenuated at a rate of 12 dB/octave, eliminating proximity effect, building rumble, air movement, motor hum, etc.
SILK / TEXTUR
Pressing the Silk button activates the Silk Red circuit, which boosts the overtones produced by the treble and high mids of your source.
This gives the top end a sparkling sheen and is often ideal for sources such as vocals, strings, pianos and other acoustic instruments.
With the Silk/Texture control engaged, the distortion characteristics and overtone content of the unit are strongly reminiscent of many of Rupert’s vintage Class A designs.
With the Texture control, the amount of Silk can be adjusted from virtually non-existent to a coloration far beyond that of vintage devices.
