Gyraf Audio’s G24 is an entirely new type of stereo compressor designed for mixing and mastering functions. Similar to its sister model and predecessor, the G23 EQ, it is intended for situations where a mix is already almost perfectly balanced, but you want to control some of the dynamics without compromising the overall definition.

Optical Compressor
This compressor is based on a carefully designed, completely passive signal path consisting of a metal film resistor, an audio transformer and a photoresistor per channel.
Only the sidechain and the controls require active electronics. But all these analog motors do is interact with the audio signal by directing a little light to a series of photoresistors that pull the channel toward one phase or another of the opposite channel signal.
Dual sidechain
The compressor has two complete and separate stereo compressor sidechains that act on the signal simultaneously – This is equivalent to two separate stereo compressors. One for short transients with fast timing, one for slow timings adjusted for gain. The “Control” pot allows seamless switching between the two compressors.
Continuously adjustable from L/R to M/S
Although the G24 may be considered two stereo compressors, it is actually two M/S compressors that are continuously variable from M-only (mid component) to S-only (side component) – the beauty of this is that when the “Elliptic” control is centered (M-compression = S-compression), it controls like two stereo compressors.
Compression FeedForward to FeedBack
A stepless “Feed” knob allows to select settings from Feed-Forward to Feed-Back.
Monocompatible sidechain signal summing for sensible M/S collapsing.
To ensure mono compatibility in both L/R and M/S operation and not cancel the side signal, the phases are shifted by +90 and -90 degrees. This ensures that when added, both channels receive +3dB side content and +3dB mid content after processing, instead of losing all “S” and receiving +6dB “M”. At the same time, this transformation ensures more precise demodulation of the sidechain amplitude – and thus much less modulation artifacts during audio compression.
Sidechain Tilt EQ
The last control on the front panel, above the “Output” Trim Gain, is the “Emphasis” control. This is a simplified version of the G23 tilt equalizer, applied to all sidechain signals. It is neutral when centered, and emphasizes high frequencies when turned clockwise and low frequencies when turned counterclockwise. This makes it easy to control which part of the spectrum activates the compression.
The “Bypass” switch bypasses the unit completely. A relay simply turns off the active electronics and short-circuits the input to the output terminals.
The G10 also provides high-pass filtering of the controlling sidechain signal, allowing more compression of bass-heavy material without creating excessive pumping artifacts. The selection of the sidechain highpass is done via three additional stages at the “Bypass” switch. Here the cutoff frequencies of approx. 80, 160 and 300Hz can be set at a soft 6dB/oct.
