Golden Age Audio Project COMP-3A Jr | Compressor

The COMP-3A Jr from Golden Age is a vintage-style single-channel compressor / leveler. The signal path uses only discrete components such as resistors, capacitors, diodes and transistors. The input and output are transformer balanced, using two different transformers, each optimized for its purpose.

The circuit used in the COMP-3A Jr is based on classic design elements and uses an integrated optocoupler to control the gain. This gives the COMP-3A Jr a unique compression characteristic. In addition, the vintage-style signal path gives the sound a wonderful and musical character. The simple operation with only two main controls makes it very easy to achieve the desired sound. These features have made vintage products with a similar design the favorites of engineers and musicians worldwide.

The attack and release times can be set in 3 stages using the TIME switch. The fastest attack time is approx. 1 ms. The control times for switch positions B and C can be increased using an internal jumper. A hardwire bypass switch is installed for easy comparison. The built-in LED display can be used to show either the output level or the peak reduction.

Both the line input and output are designed as XLR sockets. Alternatively, the outgoing signal can be tapped via a TRS socket. A further jack connection allows linking between two COMP-3A Jr. units. The compressor is housed in a 1RU quarter-rack housing and can therefore be accommodated with up to four devices side by side in a 19″ rack. To avoid interactions with the audio circuits and transformers, the compressor is operated with an external power supply.
