Conventional voice coil drivers use a magnetic field to push/pull the driver in one direction and rely on the elasticity of the surround to return the driver to the neutral position.
Planar drivers combine the dynamic and electrostatic driver principles.
They consist of a precise array of magnets arranged evenly across both sides of a thin, electrically active diaphragm.

Due to the precision of this magnetic field, the force exerted on the diaphragm is distributed symmetrically, resulting in a signal with very low harmonic distortion and incredibly fast response times.

Because planar drivers use front and rear magnets to apply equal forces in both directions, there is far less stress on the driver material, resulting in a much more natural sound with less distortion.
