  • Far-field ribbon microphone with balanced lows and highs
  • Stereo version of the AEA N8
  • Features two Big Ribbons™ in a fixed floral and mid-side configuration
  • Open and natural sound
  • Directional characteristic: Eight

The R88 from AEA is a stereo microphone with bloom and mid-side configuration and captures a room as it sounds live and personal with all the subtleties and nuances present.
The wide frequency response and balanced bass range ensure that it can capture the full range of sound from the back of a room, over a drum kit or other instrument group.

Together with the mono AEA N8, it has the widest frequency range of all AEA microphones and easily handles more complex sources such as drums, strings, piano and other instruments that produce pronounced transients, harsh highs and booming bass.
The Blumlein configuration of the ribbons allows for a wide recording angle so that an entire ensemble and room can be captured with the R88 alone.

The 88 Series microphones are the sound engineer’s secret weapon, offering recording detail and balance like no other microphone on the market.
Packaged in a sleek, black housing designed for quick setup, it’s an excellent choice for remote recording.
They are particularly well suited to rock, roots, classical, Americana and jazz genres and are so versatile that engineers like John Cuniberti use them as a single microphone to record an entire band playing live in the same room.
There’s a reason why the legendary Blackbird Studios in Nashville owns five R88s.

frequency response is consistent, -35dB zero at 90º /
  • Off-axis vertical: level changes with angle,
    reduced HF frequency response above/below 0º / 180º -25dB;
    zero at 90º / 270º
  • Material: Corrugated ribbon made of pure aluminum

R88 Series

Blumlein and mid-side technology

The design of the R88 series is based on the tradition of stereo recordings.
In 1931, EMI engineer Alan Blumlein invented stereo recording by demonstrating the natural reproduction of the sound stage in one of the Abbey Road studios in London.

Today, Blumlein’s XY coincident recording technique lives on in the AEA R88 series, which uses two figure-of-eight ribbons for the authentic reproduction of a performance.
The two elements are angled at 90 degrees in perfect phase and positioned in close proximity to each other along the vertical axis of the microphone.

As an alternative to Blumlein’s technique, the microphone can also be used for mid-side stereo (MS), which offers excellent mono compatibility and full control over the width of the stereo image.

Executions

R88:
  • Maximum sound pressure level: 165 dB SPL (1% third harmonic > 1 kHz)
  • Sensitivity: 2.5 mV/Pa (-52 dBV) in the loaded circuit
  • Output impedance: 270 Ohm
  • Recommended load impedance: 1.2 kOhm or more
  • Phantom power: No

R88A:

  • Maximum sound pressure level: 141+ dB SPL (1% third harmonic > 1 kHz)
  • Sensitivity: 6.3 mV/Pa (-44 dBV) in the loaded circuit
  • Output impedance: 92 Ohm
  • Recommended load impedance: 1 kOhm or more
  • Phantom power: P48 phantom power, 7 mA

The R88A has the same sonic character as the R88, but offers an additional 12 dB more output power and a stable impedance that allows flexibility when recording quiet sources through any preamplifier.
