- R44C with 6dB more output
- Unsurpassed warmth and legendary character
- Full and rich sound with generous low bass and proximity effect
- Directional characteristic: Eight
Whether it’s the smooth horns of a classic Hollywood movie soundtrack, the velvety richness of a jazz vocal or the larger-than-life drum sound of a classic rock recording, AEA’s R44 is perfect for these and many other recording situations.
It is the successor to the legendary RCA 44 ribbon microphone, which has been used in recording and broadcast studios around the world for more than 80 years and has a history as long as its sound and character.
This instantly recognizable sound produces thunderous bass, full and rich mids and a unique top end that takes the edge off hard instruments due to the strong proximity effect.
In 1976, AEA decided to service the thousands of RCA ribbon microphones in the world.
By 1998, AEA had acquired all the interchangeable parts used in the original RCA 44.
That same year, the manufacturer introduced the new edition of the R44 – the AEA R44C – using the original RCA methods and techniques.
The AEA R44 continues to deliver the characterful and colorful sound of the icon.
The R44 is suitable for a wide range of instruments and rooms.
It boosts the mids and lows while smoothing out the harsh high frequencies to create a multi-dimensional sound unlike any other microphone in the world.
The R44 is the ideal choice for capturing the sound of any voice or instrument while conveying its legendary ribbon character.
- Functional principle: Pressure gradient transducer

- Polarity: Pin 2 high for positive pressure on the front
of the microphone - Off-Axis Horizontal: Up to 90 dB suppression at
right angles to the front and rear axes - Off-axis vertical: level changes with the angle of incidence,
but frequency response is constant - Material: Corrugated ribbon made of pure aluminum
- Thickness: 1.8 µm
- Width: 0.185 inch
- Length: 59.7 mm
- Connection: XLR (3m included in scope of delivery)

R44 Series
Replica of the icon from 1936
The R44 Series microphones all have the authentic sound, feel and look of the 1936-38 RCA 44BX. The R44 Series microphones are all faithfully detailed, handcrafted replicas with parts interchangeable with an original RCA 44.
A total of three different versions of the R44 and an optional hotrod (higher output) are available.
Basically, every version of the R44 sounds the same when used with a ribbon preamplifier.
The main differences between the versions are the output level, the external appearance and therefore the price.
Executions
- Maximum sound pressure level: 165+ dB SPL (1% third harmonic > 1 kHz)
- Sensitivity R44C/CE: 2.25 mV/Pa (-53 dBV) in the loaded circuit
- Sensitivity R44CX/CXE: 4.47 mV/Pa (-47 dBV) in the loaded circuit
- Output impedance: 270 Ohm
- Recommended load impedance: 1.2 kOhm or more
- Phantom power: No
A440:
- Maximum sound pressure level: 136+ dB SPL (1% third harmonic > 1 kHz)
- Sensitivity: 30 mV/Pa (-33.5 dBV) in the loaded circuit
- Output impedance: 92 Ohm
- Recommended load impedance: 1 kOhm or more
- Phantom power: P48 phantom power, 7 mA
The passive R44 is available in two versions: as a faithful replica in museum quality (R44C) and as the aesthetically pleasing R44CE.
Both microphones have an identical sound and are exactly the same inside.
The difference between the two is only cosmetic and price-related.

In addition, a modified R44 transducer, the X-Motor, was developed, which contains two additional magnets.
These provide an additional 6 dB of output power.
The X-Motor is sonically identical to the original and is suitable for scoring and classical sessions and other applications that require a wide dynamic range with the classic 44 sound.
The X-Motor version of the R44 is available as an upgrade for the R44C and CE models and has a red badge on the outside instead of the standard black badge.
The active A440 is a preamplifier-flexible R44. It has the same sound character as the passive R44C, but with an additional output power of 18 dB and greater flexibility with different preamplifiers. Many sound engineers prefer the A440 to their old RCA 44 because of the advantages in noise performance. This microphone is equipped with the classic umber-colored transformer housing from RCA.
The active A440 is an ultra-premium version of the R44C. It is equipped with a customized Lehle transformer, RPQ-JFET preamplifier electronics and the “X” motor hotrod and is the quietest ribbon microphone ever made.
