  • AEA’s new development of the legendary RCA KU3A
  • Near-field ribbon microphone with reduced proximity effect
  • Extended top end with classic ribbon softness
  • Directional characteristic: Supercardioid

The KU4 is a redesign of the legendary RCA KU3A, a unidirectional microphone originally developed for use in Hollywood film studios. It was RCA’s most expensive ribbon microphone and less than 600 were produced.

The KU3A combined the soft ribbon sound of the classic RCA 44 with a unidirectional polar pattern, a wide sweet spot and reduced bass boost. It expanded the sound engineer’s placement options and became the standard in film studios around the world.

Today, the KU3A is a rare collector’s item and only a handful of studios or rental companies own it. The original KU3As are notorious for their tonal inconsistencies, which are due to production tolerances where, among other things, the thick hair of English cows was used as damping material.

AEA developed the KU4 from the ground up to replicate this groundbreaking design while ensuring flawless consistency from device to device. It is one of the most useful and unique ribbon microphones in the world. Its supercardioid polar pattern suppresses crosstalk from other instruments and reflections in the room while providing unparalleled top-end clarity. As the brightest microphone in the AEA lineup, it retains the full sound spectrum that has made ribbon microphones a staple in most major recording studios around the world.

  • Functional principle: Pressure gradient transducer

Unique and Versatile

Ribbon with capacitor properties

The KU4’s minimal proximity effect and accentuated midrange make it an exceptional vocal microphone that captures the presence and detail of a performance. Its near-field characteristic is also suitable for close-up recording of kick drums, strings and woodwinds and provides a welcome brightness and balance in the mix.

The supercardioid characteristic of the KU4 makes it possible to record the direct sound of a singer or instrument without room sound. This is an advantage when recording musicians in the same room or live on stage. With most figure-of-eight ribbon microphones, positioning the microphone can require some finesse to avoid other sources using the microphone’s nulls. The KU4 has none of these limitations.

As it is a near-field ribbon microphone, the microphone was developed for positioning between one and 18 inches away from the sound source. The proximity effect of the microphone starts at a distance of six centimeters from the sound source. It can be placed close to an instrument while maintaining a balanced frequency response.

After getting used to bright condenser microphones, traditional ribbon microphones sometimes sound darker than desired. The KU4, with its unique bright character, combines the best elements of condenser and ribbon microphones – in particular a smooth midrange that doesn’t emphasize sibilance as is often the case with condenser microphones.
