The Shelford Channel consists of Rupert Neve’s first Class A microphone preamp with transformer amplification, a “best-of-the-classics” induction EQ section, a high-sounding diode bridge compressor, variable silk saturation, a new custom transformer output stage with twice the operating voltage of the vintage designs.
The Shelford Channel, which has been over fifty years in the making, is the final evolution of the original technologies in Rupert’s classic console modules such as the 1073, 1064 and 2254.
Like Rupert’s designs from his time in Little Shelford, the Shelford Channel’s preamp uses a direct-coupled transformer input, with the gain provided by the custom transformer itself—a first for Rupert Neve in over 40 years. This new, specially developed input transformer, together with its careful integration into the surrounding Class-A circuitry, is crucial to the channel strip’s bold and instantly recognizable character.
Conveniently, the direct input uses the same topology as the best-selling RNDI Active Transformer Direct Interface, which offers amazing clarity for high-Z instrument signals with unparalleled low-frequency response and an incredibly smooth high-frequency response.

THE BEST OF EQ
The Shelford Channel’s 3-band inductive EQ was inspired by our favorite elements of Rupert’s vintage EQs. The low-frequency band was designed to produce a creamy, resonant bass response, similar to that of a vintage 1064 —but unlike the vintage modules, the Shelford Channel’s LF band can be used as either a shelf or a peak filter, giving the low frequencies punch, dimension, and control.
The midband is based on that of the 1073 and is ideal for refining vocals and instruments and bringing them to the forefront of a mix. With its “proportional Q” response, it is well-suited for minimizing problematic frequencies. The high-frequency band is a hybrid vintage/modern design that combines inductive circuits with capacitor-based topologies to achieve vintage sounds with improved control, with the shelf/peak corner switchable between 8K and 16K.

The compressor
Like the Inductor EQ and Transformer Gain mic preamp, the diode bridge compressor in the Shelford Channel is based on the same topologies found in Rupert’s vintage designs – but refined and adapted for the modern engineer.
What is diode bridge compression?
While the VCA compressor in the Master Buss Processor provides unsurpassed clarity, the weighty, harmonically rich tonality of the diode bridge compression can be instrumental in bringing important sources such as vocals, electric guitars, bass and drums to the forefront of a mix.
Knowing the limitations of vintage gear like the legendary 2254, careful work was done to reproduce the unique sound of these classics while improving the noise floor and accuracy, expanding the inflexible time constants, adding full-wave sidechain detection for improved dynamics, and extending the range of the threshold and ratio controls.
Delivering the powerful sound of these iconic designs with enhanced flexibility for the modern age, the Shelford Diode Bridge Compressor is a dynamic tool that can make a statement in virtually any mix or track.
Silk
At the end of the Shelford Channel signal path lies the unique and highly sought-after variable Silk circuit, which provides the power and control to boost the second and third harmonics. From a subtle transformer-like tone without Silk to significantly more color than vintage modules with the Silk/Texture circuit turned all the way up, the output stage of the Shelford Track can fill the mix with more power and brilliance.
Custom Transformer Outputs
The Shelford Channel features a dedicated transformer output stage with a balanced standard LINE output. Additionally, a separate -6dBu XLR output can compensate for high input levels and Silk’s harmonic saturation, allowing engineers to drive the Shelford to its full potential to achieve more harmonics without overdriving the next device in the chain. Both outputs are active and can be used simultaneously.
The LINE output is designed to capture an uncolored sound at high levels, avoid nonlinear coloration in the output stage, and take full advantage of the Shelford’s higher voltage. The -6dB output, on the other hand, is optimized to allow the sound engineer to tap into the channel’s full voltage range—thereby adding dynamic sound with the same nonlinear “coloration”—without overdriving most professional interfaces. For drums, vocals, guitars, and other instruments, this output allows you to access the transformer’s “sweet spot” with its nonlinear harmonic content, which brings a recorded performance to life in a way that other effects cannot.
