Empirical Labs EL8X-S Distressor | 19″ Dual Mono Compressor EL8-S with “British Mode”

The Empirical Labs EL8-X-S is a factory-matched stereo compressor set consisting of two fully equipped EL8-X Distressors. This version combines the classic analog signal processing of the Distressor with the extended functions “British Mode” and “Stereo Image Link”. The set is aimed at users who require precise stereo compression with flexible sound shaping and an extended linking system – for example in the areas of mastering, bus compression, mixing drum overheads or parallel dynamics processing.

Both EL8-X devices in the set are calibrated at the factory, matched to each other and supplied with all the necessary link cables. The “British Mode” enables a particularly aggressive compression behavior, inspired by the well-known multi-ratio circuit of the UREI 1176 (“All-Buttons-In” mode). In the EL8-X, this mode can be activated on the hardware side via a dedicated switch and can be applied independently to each ratio – even to 1:1, which allows targeted transient control.

The “Stereo Image Link” system extends the standard link function (Phase Link) with a level-based link. Users can choose between pure level link, classic phase link or a combination of both methods. This allows a denser stereo image to be created (e.g. for room microphones) or symmetrical left/right compression to be realized (e.g. for sum processing or mix bus).

Each unit in the EL8-X-S set offers eight discrete compression ratios – from 1:1 (saturation without compression) to “Nuke” mode (brickwall limiting). The 10:1 “Opto” mode simulates classic optical compressors with a separate detector circuit. There are also three distortion modes per channel: Dist 2 produces tube-like 2nd-order harmonics, Dist 3 emulates tape saturation with dominant 3rd-order harmonics. Both channels also have two high-pass filters – one in the detector and one in the audio path – for targeted control of low frequencies and to reduce unwanted pumping effects.

The EL8-X-S set is based on fully analog signal processing with digitally controlled operating logic. The devices are cascadable and can theoretically be linked to other units. The set is suitable for professional studio environments where flexible dynamic processing and harmonic sound coloration in stereo-balanced signal routing are required.
